Liftoff

"three…two…one" Kayla counted down the strides as she approached the last jump of her warm-up round. Annie carefully tucked her knees and flew over it like it was nothing, giving Kayla a perfect distance. The course had gone well and she knew that the mare was ready for her class. Kayla walked Annie out of the ring and into the waiting area.
"How did that feel?" Her father, Andrew, asked.
"Great. If we can just find our distance to the grey bricks we will be good".
The horse before her entered the ring an began their round. From what she had been watching all riders had put in good trips. She knew the mare would need to be perfect to place well.
It was only Annie's first show and she was young. But so far the mare had adjusted well, Kayla knew that she had a great career ahead of her in the hunter ring. Her greenness would show in little things, but overall the mare appeared much more experienced than she was. She acted calmly and coolly even when horses around her weren't behaving. Kayla clapped politely when the rider before her finished her round.
Kayla and Annie entered the arena, courtesy circled and started her course. After a five stride line came an angle jump, the dreaded grey brick wall. She looked at the jump early and lined the mare up straight with the middle of the jump.
three…two…one…
